Financial controls consultancy and ICFR support

Financial-control design, SOX and ICFR readiness, and hands-on remediation that make frameworks work in day-to-day operations.

    Where Tim can help

Stronger controls. Clearer ownership. Less unnecessary complexity.

For finance leaders and process owners who need a clearer control framework, support with SOX/ICFR readiness, or practical capacity to test controls and address identified gaps.

Tim works with finance and process owners to identify what could go wrong, distinguish essential controls from unnecessary activity, and build evidence that stands up to scrutiny. Design, implementation and testing are connected rather than treated as separate exercises.

    Support shaped around the requirement

    • Financial-control frameworks and risk/control matrices
    • SOX and ICFR readiness, gap assessment and testing
    • Control rationalisation, ownership and monitoring
    • Remediation delivery and material-controls evidence

    Example deliverables

    • A financial risk/control matrix with clear descriptions, owners and evidence requirements.
    • A prioritised design and operating-effectiveness gap assessment within the agreed scope.
    • A remediation and testing roadmap, with implementation support and handover evidence.

    Practical questions

    Financial controls questions & answers

What does a financial-controls framework engagement include?

Depending on scope, it can cover financial reporting risks, control descriptions, ownership, evidence requirements, testing and remediation. Start with the important processes and exposures rather than documenting every activity. SOX/ICFR readiness work is scoped to the organisation’s needs; it is not statutory audit or certification.

What is the difference between control design and operating effectiveness?

Design asks whether a control, if performed as described, could address the relevant risk. Operating effectiveness asks whether it actually worked over the period examined. A well-described approval is not enough on its own: testing needs evidence of how and when it was performed.

How can a team decide which control gaps to address first?

Prioritise the exposure, its significance and any existing mitigating controls, then consider dependencies and delivery capacity. Agree owners, evidence of completion and a retesting approach. A prioritised roadmap makes trade-offs visible; management retains the decisions about risk and resources.
